Fish intestinal microbiota changes with diet and this effect is of particular interest considering the increasing substitution of fish meal by plant protein sources. The objective of this work was to study the effects of partial substitution of fish meal with lupin and rapeseed meals on gut microbiota of the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and in goldfish (Carassius auratus). Hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) plays an important role in glucose metabolism because it catalyzes the release of glucose to the circulatory system in the processes of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. The present study was initiated to analyze the regulation of hepatic G6Pase expression by dietary carbohydrates in rainbow trout. The first step in our study was the identification of a partial G6Pase cDNA in rainbow trout that was highly homologous to that of mammals. The enzyme glucokinase (GK) (EC 2.7.1.1) plays an important role in the control of glucose homeostasis. Qualitative and/or quantitative variations in GK enzyme have been postulated by previous studies to explain why dietary carbohydrate utilisation is lower in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) than in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). In this study, we report the isolation and characterisation of a full-length cDNA coding for GK in these teleosts. For developing efficient diets, two sets of experiments examined whether the use and allocation of dietary protein can be traced by labelling with stable isotopes (N-15 and C-13) in two culture fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss and Sparus aurata). In the first experiment, natural abundance and tissue distribution of these isotopes were determined, by measuring the delta C-13 and delta N-15 values by isotopic ratio mass spectrometry, in fingerlings (14-17 g) adapted to diets differing in the percentage of fish meal replacement by plant protein sources. Protein sparing effect of dietary lipids in common dentex (Dentex dentex): a comparative study with sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Regulation of feed intake, growth, nutrient and energy utilisation in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed high fat diets ArchiMer

Three practical isoproteic (54% protein) diets were formulated to contain graded levels of crude fat (diet L: 10%, diet M: 20% and diet H: 30%). The aim of the study was to determine whether changes in the tissue fatty acid (FA) profile follows a simple test dilution model after changing the dietary oil sources in gilthead sea bream. A 14-month trial was conducted with juvenile fish of 18 g initial body weight fed either a fish oil-based diet (FO diet) or vegetable oils replacing 33% (33VO) and 66% (66VO) of fish oil. The trial included 3 months feeding a fish oil finishing diet to follow the restoration of the FA profile with the FO diet. Three experiments were performed in order to measure voluntary feed intake and feed waste, faecal losses and soluble losses of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainbow trout (average body weight: 100 g). The amino acid compositions of whole body tissue of European seabass, gilthead seabream and turbot of two different size classes were determined. No significant differences were detected between species and the composition was not affected by body size. Based on whole body indispensable amino acids (IAA) to total IAA ratios (A/E ratios), the IAA requirement profiles for the three species were estimated and compared to data available to date for some amino acids, obtained using dose-response curves.
